Dear Writing Diary Entry #41
I Found an Editor for My Upcoming Fantasy Novel!
In this entry, I share my process and timeline for finding an editor for my upcoming fantasy novel as well as announce a weekend e-book sale.
February 26, 2026
Dear Writing Diary,
At long last, I’ve finally found an editor for my upcoming fantasy novel! It was important to me to have a human editor with publishing industry experience review and provide in-depth feedback for my novel to make it the best version possible, so here’s a quick look at the timeline and process I went through to find the best editor for my project.
Editing Timeline
✅ December 2025 – January 2026: I reached out to 5 editors on a platform called Reedsy and paid each of them for a sample development edit of my first chapters. Developmental edits for full novels are expensive, so I did this to get a sense of each editor’s styles and their suggestions for revisions before I decided on the one I would like to continue working with.
✅ January 2026: Each editor provided me with a summary of their feedback and suggestions as well as the sample chapter containing their edits and comments in track changes. After reviewing these, I ultimately chose my current editor for some of the following reasons:
· Her edit summary was the longest and most thorough one I received. It was 8 pages for a single chapter sample!
· She has great publishing experience, having previously worked at one of the big 5 publishers in NYC.
· Even though I didn’t agree with all of her suggestions for revisions, her feedback consisted of good points I never considered, and she had an eye for details within the worldbuilding that I believe will make the novel stronger.
✅ June 2026: She won’t be able to start the edit for my novel until June, so in the meantime, I will do another revision of my novel based on her sample chapter feedback before I submit it to her at the end of May.
✅ Fall 2026: It will take her about 2 months to complete the edit, so I will be working on incorporating her feedback into my revisions in the fall of this year.
✅ 2027 Publication: I originally hoped to release this novel later this year. However, given the timeline above (along with juggling my day job), I am now looking toward a release date in 2027 in order to take the time to make the book the best it can be before I release it. I am so excited to share it with you all!
Stay tuned for more details and excerpts in the coming months!
